Historical lecture by Lynne Rodier
Theme : Hydroelectricity at the Deschênes Rapids
Date : February 19th 2025 at 7:30 pm
The Conroy family farm prepares for a major transformation of its industrial facilities at the Deschênes Rapids. Their prosperous dairy farm bordered the mighty rapids, and the Conroy brothers, recent graduates of McGill University, analyzed the potential for power generation on their property. This Conroy family history accelerated hydroelectric development and the introduction of the Hull Electric Co. streetcar in 1896. The enormous financial risks of the family’s electrical venture wiped out their capital in 1906. Hydroelectricity encouraged the site’s industrial development, and the Conroys turned to Pontiac to continue their wild hydroelectric adventure. This presentation relies on a rich collection of digitized 19th and 20th century photographs to tell the story of Deschênes Rapids.
